Isenhower Rara Avis Grenache
The 2017 The Rara Avis (Latin for Rare Bird) is a slight departure from the 100% Grenache from 2016. We added Grenache from Olsen Ranch’s neighbor, Lonesome Springs Vineyard and Mourvèdre is making a return to the Rara Avis Blend which is now 86% Grenache and 14% Mourvèdre. The texture is luscious and the Grenache has flavors of cherries, white pepper, and dried herbs. Yum!
The Rara Avis has a brilliant red hue and aromas of dried cherries, damp earth, minerals and hints of sage and white pepper. There is excellent balance between smooth character, acidity and light tanins.
All the grapes were hand-picked and hand-sorted, and 100% destemmed. We avoided whole cluster fermentation because of mildew scars on the stems of the Grenache. The grapes were fermented to dryness by yeasts native to their respective vineyards and the wines finished the malo-lactic fermentation in puncheon. The blend was created in June 2018, aged in used French Oak Puncheons for 18 months prior to bottling.
